EU to strengthen trade and technology ties to lure India from Russian sphere of influence

Image
European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen on Monday said a partnership with India will be a priority for the EU as she told New Delhi of a threat to its regional interests after  Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ms Von der Leyen is the latest international leader to visit India in an attempt to lure the South Asian nation away from Russia’s influence with pledges of security, defence and energy co-operation. Bilawal Zardari Bhutto: high hopes rest on Pakistan's youngest foreign minister

Image
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was just 19 years old when the assassination of his mother catapulted him from carefree student to leader of one of  Pakistan ‘s biggest political parties. Three days after a Taliban bomb killed  Benazir Bhutto  in 2007, the Oxford history student took over as chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). His precocious rise to political prominence has continued with his appointment as the youngest foreign minister in Pakistan’s history, taking one of the most high-profile postings in the new  Shehbaz Sharif government  at just 33. The role places Mr Bhutto Zardari on the world stage and at the head of attempts to soothe relations with the US after former prime minister Imran Khan accused Washington of  plotting to have him removed . But analysts also see the appointment as a step towards achieving the hopes of the storied Bhutto family and their party of  returning to power in Pakistan . As the son of Benazir Bhutto, who was prime mini

Europe’s 'fragile' energy market waits for Putin’s next move on gas exports

Image
Europe may be hurtling toward a  sudden halt of Russian gas , a scenario that would trigger energy rationing, higher inflation and a deep recession. A showdown over payment terms has already led  Moscow to turn off taps to Poland and Bulgaria . With supply already tight, it won’t take much more to send energy markets into shock. Europe’s natural gas balance is “fragile and it remains just one supply disruption away from completely falling apart”, said Shikha Chaturvedi, an analyst at JPMorgan Chase. Jerusalem holy site clashes fuel fears of return to war

Image
As we waited to see exactly what would happen, so was Israel’s prime minister. A right-wing nationalist himself, some of those here once supported Naftali Bennett. But not anymore. Angry chants on Wednesday told him to “go home”. “We came here because it’s the Passover holiday, to show that this city is ours, that it belongs to the nation of Israel,” said Matan, gripping the hand of his smallest child. “This is our city, our capital, our country.” The prevailing feeling was that as the leader of an ideologically diverse coalition, which includes an Arab Islamist party, Mr Bennett had sold out and failed to deal effectively with recent tensions in Jerusalem. A prominent banner declared his rival, the opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu, to be “king”, and there were big cheers for far-right politician, Itamar Ben Gvir. He told me that Mr Bennett was being held back from doing the correct thing by his fragile government, which recently lost its parliamentary majority after one of his o

Netflix Has Finally Hit a Wall. Where Does it Go From Here?

Image
The company has resisted making major changes for the past year despite slowing growth. Now it’s tearing up its playbook. For more than a year, Netflix has told anyone who would listen that there was nothing to worry about. Its subscriber growth was slowing, but the problem was temporary. It was just working through Covid weirdness. Yesterday, the company reversed itself and admitted its business is losing momentum. Netflix lost 200,000 customers in the first three months of the year. The company predicts it will lose another 2 million this quarter. Its stock dropped more than 35% today. Netflix, worth $308 billion in November, is now worth less than $100 billion. You will read a lot of takes about what this means over the coming days and weeks. Many skeptics of the streaming business will use this moment to claim they were right all along. Netflix is doomed, as is anyone who blindly follows in its footsteps. Ignore them. Netflix defied expectations for a decade and gave every compan

Jerusalem violence puts strain on Israel's coalition government

Image
Clashes in Jerusalem that have stoked tensions during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan spread into Sunday, triggering 18 arrests and putting further strain on Israel’s coalition government. Israeli riot police faced off with fireworks-hurling Palestinians in the alleyways of the walled Old City after a visit by Jews to a disputed holy site. Several passengers on two buses were lightly wounded when stone-throwing Palestinians smashed the vehicles’ windows. And a small group of Jewish worshippers was attacked. Sunday’s confrontations were less violent than clashes at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound two days earlier, but they were enough to prompt a small but pivotal Arab party to review its membership in Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s ruling coalition, which no longer has a majority in parliament. The United Arab List – the first party drawn from the country’s 21 percent Arab minority to join an Israeli government – said it was suspending its government membership over Is

The group’s new spokesman, Abu-Omar al-Muhajjir, also called on supporters to resume attacks in Europe, taking advantage of the “available opportunity” of “the crusaders fighting each other” — in reference to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The militant group’s previous leader died in early February when he detonated a bomb to avoid capture during a US raid in northwest Syria, the White House and US defence officials said. On March 10, the group confirmed his death, along with the group’s former spokesman, naming Abu Hasan al-Hashemi al-Qurashi as the new leader. Little is known about the new lea
